Hookless and tubeless tyre compatibility: separate every permission
Hookless describes a rim interface; tubeless describes an assembly system. Check exact tyre and rim permissions, width and pressure conditions independently—an inner tube does not resolve an unsupported pairing.

Keep the wheel reference notes on paper
The unfilled free worksheet creates no bike or compatibility result. Reading changes no tyre or pressure.
Open toolA parts list can contain the words tubeless, hookless and compatible while still leaving the assembly unresolved. Those words answer different questions. One concerns the rim wall, another the tyre/rim air-retention system, and another the exact manufacturer permission. This guide organises the questions before any mechanical action. It is not a list of approved tyres, a fitting tutorial or a pressure recommendation.
Keep rim geometry separate from the air system
Hookless identifies a straight-sided rim interface without the inward hook used by a hooked rim. Tubeless describes a system intended to operate without an inner tube under its specified requirements. Do not assume that all tubeless-ready rims are hookless or that all hooked assemblies are tube-only. Identify the actual rim model, generation and construction from the manufacturer rather than inferring it from a marketing photograph.
The tyre has its own identity and construction. A folding bead, a tubeless-ready label and a particular width are separate fields, not synonyms for universal hookless approval. Names can remain similar while generations or sizes have different requirements. Preserve the full product designation and applicable documentation instead of shortening it to a brand name.
Read both manufacturers for the exact pairing
Schwalbe states that its hookless combinations require the specified TLE/TLR tyre types and the wheel/rim manufacturer’s compatible widths and other conditions. That is a manufacturer-specific statement, not a declaration that every tubeless tyre from every brand is approved everywhere. ENVE likewise retains an exact tubeless-compatible tyre requirement when describing inner-tube use on its hookless rims.
Begin with the rim or wheel’s current documentation, then the tyre’s applicable instructions. Record the exact sizes and any generation or use restrictions. If either party excludes the combination, a broad catalogue label from the other side is not permission to ignore it. If the documents conflict or do not identify your pairing, keep the result unresolved and ask the relevant manufacturer or qualified mechanic before proceeding.
A tube is not a bead-retention adapter
A permitted system may allow an inner tube, but that does not change the tyre bead or create an inward hook on the rim. The air-containment choice and the tyre/rim interface are independent checks. Using a tube therefore cannot turn an expressly unsupported tyre into a permitted hookless pairing. This distinction matters even when the tyre’s diameter and the rim’s diameter match.
Do not interpret this guide as roadside repair instructions. Tube material, dimensions and other component restrictions may also apply to an otherwise permitted pairing. ENVE’s support article explicitly preserves conflicting tube-manufacturer limitations. Retain those restrictions instead of treating every emergency or backup use as exempt from the exact assembly requirements.
Width permission is not a physical width guess
The permitted tyre-size range belongs to the exact rim and tyre documentation. It cannot be reverse-engineered from an observed gap, a size label with an identical diameter or a fictional cross-section. Internal rim width, nominal tyre width and measured mounted width answer different dimensional questions. Use the convention required by the applicable source when checking a width condition.
A tyre measuring wider than its nominal label does not automatically move it into a different approved size category. Conversely, a nominal size inside a generic table does not override a model-specific exclusion. Keep the designation and observation side by side. Do not substitute one when the current instruction asks for the other. An unrecorded internal width remains unknown rather than being filled from external rim width.
Limits are constraints, not operating targets
Record every applicable pressure condition with its component and source. Schwalbe’s hookless explanation warns that a tyre sidewall maximum does not override a lower rim or system limit. This article deliberately gives no universal pressure to inflate to. It also does not reproduce a maximum from one family as permission for every road, gravel or mountain-bike assembly.
A fictional permitted system with documented upper bounds of 4.0 and 3.5 bar has an upper-bound intersection of 3.5 bar. That arithmetic is not a recommended operating pressure, not the whole allowed range and not evidence that the pairing is permitted in the first place. Lower bounds or other conditions can still matter. If two required ranges do not overlap, there is no arithmetic adjustment that resolves their conflict.
Keep installation requirements outside the shortcut
Even a documented compatible tyre/rim pair can have further requirements for the air system, relevant tape, valve and other parts. The guide does not provide mounting, bead-seating, sealant or inflation steps. Do not loosen, fit or inflate components to make the educational record look complete. Exact current instructions and physical condition remain necessary for separately authorised work.
A browser cannot inspect damage, wear, correct seating or an entire assembled system. A generic checker that sees matching diameter and a low pressure would therefore be answering too little. For this reason, OpenBikeFit supplies a record-first reading path rather than a green compatible badge inferred from partial inputs. No measurement or fictional diagram here approves riding an assembly.
Carry a clear unresolved question to a human
A useful note lists tyre and rim identity, size and generation; bead-seat diameter; internal rim width; rim construction; tyre type; permitted tube/tubeless configuration; each applicable limit and source; and any unknown or conflict. Attach a specific question to the unresolved item rather than reporting a general fits conclusion. Keep personal or completed client data outside a business inquiry.
The free blank worksheet can hold these references on paper, while the width guide separates installed dimensions from nominal ones. The final circumference guide applies only after the relevant assembly condition is already established; a rolling observation cannot certify compatibility retrospectively. Reading this page saves no record, changes no pressure and requests no account. A later workshop service or mechanical decision remains a separate agreement and action.
Practical questions
Frequently asked questions
Does tubeless-ready mean approved on every hookless rim?
No. Resolve the exact tyre, size, generation and rim permissions plus their applicable conditions. A marketing label cannot replace those documents.
Does adding an inner tube make an unsupported tyre compatible?
No. A tube does not change the bead-retention interface. Any permitted tube use still needs the exact tyre/rim pairing and other component requirements.
Should I inflate to the smaller printed maximum?
A maximum is an upper constraint, not a prescribed operating value. Resolve permission and all applicable conditions first; this guide recommends no pressure.
What if the tyre and wheel documents disagree?
Keep the conflict unresolved for the relevant manufacturer or qualified mechanic. Do not infer permission by selecting the more convenient statement.
