Save bike fit measurements: local records, exports and backups
Keep a bicycle record beyond one browser: distinguish dated passport copies, setup cards, profile JSON and complete archives, choose the right existing recovery route and recognise what no copy preserves.

- Working browser
Saved local records — not account sync. - Separate file
Deliberately downloaded scope and date — not a live record. - Destination review
Choose the supported reader, then separately add — no silent merge.
Preparation ≠ download ≠ review ≠ committed recovery. This is a workflow map, not live storage status; the ledger names each copy’s exclusions.

Choose the right existing copy
Read the local inventory
Opens Settings only. No preparation, download, file selection, recovery or deletion starts from this link.
Open toolA measurement written into a bicycle profile can be useful months later only if you can find the record, understand its references and retain an appropriate copy. OpenBikeFit has several existing ways to preserve or discuss data, but they are not interchangeable. A dated entry inside the garage, a one-bike CSV and a complete archive each answer a different question. This guide helps you choose the copy by its contents, not by its filename or the reassuring word “saved”.
Read the whole guide without entering a measurement, creating a bicycle, accepting an agreement or choosing a file. Its example is fictional and is not an importable archive. Nothing here checks a real bicycle, authorises an adjustment, authenticates somebody’s record or promises that deleted browser data can be recovered. All public tools remain free; opening one is separate from performing its data actions.
The quick answer: retain a copy outside the working browser
If you want a readable note for one bicycle, start with its setup card. If you want portable bike profiles without fit sessions or history, use the bike-profile JSON export. If you want the saved database record set, use the private archive in Settings and inspect its included inventory before separately choosing Download. If raw videos make the complete file impractical for recovery, keep that complete export and also consider the explicitly marked recovery copy without videos.
Do not clear site data or discard your only working browser on the assumption that another signed-in device has the same records. Check that the intended file actually exists in your chosen location, that you can locate it again and that its type is accepted by the destination reader. A button reporting Download started cannot check the final saved file, its future availability or its separate storage arrangements for you.
Know what saved in this browser actually means
The bicycle passport is a saved profile describing declared bicycle values and their references. A dated passport copy is a separate history entry made from an opened saved source. A fit session is another record type, with its own context and possible links to reduced pose series or optional video. Saving one of these does not silently create all the others. A new date on a copied profile does not mean that somebody measured the bicycle again.
Browser data belongs to a particular site origin and browsing context. The public app does not provide account-side synchronisation of these core records. A browser account, a bookmark or an installed shortcut is not an OpenBikeFit archive. MDN describes origin-based storage, best-effort retention and different private-browsing behaviour. Retention can be affected by browser policy or user removal; no fixed lifetime or private-mode diagnosis follows from an empty list alone.
Choose the copy by what it preserves
Use the eight-copy ledger below before selecting an export or treating a history entry as a backup. Read all three parts of the relevant entry: what it contains, what it excludes and the reader that can use it. “JSON” names a general syntax, not a universal import contract. Two JSON files can be valid text yet carry entirely different records and require different workflows.
The distinction is especially important for history. The profile JSON can faithfully retain a bicycle’s current values while leaving its dated history behind. A printed setup card may be exactly the document needed for a discussion, but it is not an archive of camera evidence. The blank worksheet is useful before any record exists; downloading it does not copy existing measurements into the blank spaces. Choose the smallest appropriate disclosure, not a file that merely looks comprehensive.
Dated passport copy
- Preserves
- One opened bicycle profile, retained as a dated bike-history event after its source check.
- Does not preserve
- A new physical observation, an external file, a complete history backup or later edits.
- Read or recover with
- Compare dated passport states in My bikes. It remains inside this browser until a suitable archive is deliberately exported.
Setup card or one-bike CSV
- Preserves
- A readable document for one selected saved bicycle, with its recorded definitions and references.
- Does not preserve
- Fit sessions, bike-history events, reduced pose records, raw videos and an importable complete archive.
- Read or recover with
- Read the card or CSV as a hand-off. The CSV is not an input to the profile or complete-archive importer.
Bike-profile JSON
- Preserves
- The selected profile from a setup card, or all saved profiles from the My bikes export.
- Does not preserve
- Fit sessions, bike history, pose series, videos, browser preferences and held unsaved proposals.
- Read or recover with
- Use Import bike profiles: review the selection, then deliberately create new local copies with new IDs. At most 100 profiles and 1,000,000 bytes.
Complete private archive
- Preserves
- All six saved database collections, including optional raw videos; inventoried browser keys and workflow drafts are captured separately in the file.
- Does not preserve
- Later edits, unsaved tab-only proposals, an account backup or automatic synchronisation. Exported browser state is not restored.
- Read or recover with
- Use Recover saved records from a complete archive in Settings. Only supported saved records are added; the recovery limit is 64 MiB (67,108,864 bytes).
Recovery copy without videos
- Preserves
- Saved fits, reduced pose series, internal metadata, bike profiles and bike history, with an explicit excluded-video count.
- Does not preserve
- Every raw video and its copied playback links. This does not delete the originals, and it is not the separate complete video archive.
- Read or recover with
- Use the same complete-archive recovery panel. The 64 MiB limit still applies; records are not silently dropped to make a smaller file.
Held-session rescue copy
- Preserves
- The session records offered by an existing unsaved or intake-revision recovery notice, when that notice provides its separate download action.
- Does not preserve
- Pose landmarks, raw videos, every other saved collection and a generic rescue of all tab memory. A passport proposal is not included merely because it is open.
- Read or recover with
- Keep it separate and read its stated scope. It is not a complete-archive substitute, and this guide promises no automatic importer for it.
Calculator result link
- Preserves
- Supported entered calculator values in the link fragment, with previous inputs only if deliberately included.
- Does not preserve
- A frozen calculation, a saved bicycle, fit-session evidence, history and a complete backup.
- Read or recover with
- Opening recalculates with the available engine. A reviewed link or its TXT copy is not a file for either saved-data importer.
Blank paper worksheet
- Preserves
- Thirty-three blank reference, measurement and hand-off spaces before you write your own observations.
- Does not preserve
- Any existing browser record, automatic completion, a saved bicycle or a machine-importable archive.
- Read or recover with
- Use the HTML preview or separately choose the PDF. Retain completed paper under your own controlled process; a blank download backs up nothing.
Read one fictional record across four times
Imagine a fictional bicycle named Workshop example. At 08:00 its saved saddle-height entry is 740 mm under a named reference. At 08:10 a dated passport copy records that same opened value. Nobody has taken a new physical observation in this example. At 08:20 the user prepares a private archive and reviews its inventory; the prepared file holds the saved records read for that preparation, not a live connection to the bicycle or future edits.
At 09:00 a separately documented observation may lead the user to save a different profile value. Neither the 08:10 history entry nor the already prepared 08:20 file is rewritten to contain that later edit. Their earlier dates remain meaningful. Do not relabel the old file as a current complete record or overwrite the only earlier copy merely to tidy a folder. If the later state must be retained, deliberately prepare and verify a new appropriate copy with a distinguishable date.
Prepare first and choose Download separately
Settings offers Prepare complete archive and Prepare recovery copy without videos. Preparation reads the saved-data snapshot, captures the inventoried browser state separately and builds a private file in a local worker. The prepared review shows included counts and size. At that point no download has started. Inspect the kind and scope, then choose the separate Download action if you want the file. Discarding preparation does not recall a download already started.
Preparation has a 60-second application waiting limit and can be cancelled. A queued native read can finish after cancellation; a suspended or frozen browser can delay the visible response. Large files still need device memory, and this is not streaming export. If a required read fails, do not call the resulting absence a successful empty backup. Resolve the failure or preserve another explicitly scoped copy; do not bypass it by deleting records or lowering checks.
Check the destination reader before moving devices
For a bicycle-profile JSON file, choose Import bike profiles in My bikes or Settings. Its supported limit is 100 profiles and 1,000,000 bytes. Review the file and choose the intended profiles; the deliberate import makes new local IDs and copies, never replaces an existing bicycle. Importing the same profile file again can create more copies. It is not a way to synchronise changes back into the original profile.
For a supported complete or no-video archive, choose Recover saved records from a complete archive in Settings. The implemented byte limit is 64 × 1024 × 1024: 64 MiB, or 67,108,864 bytes. Some existing interface text rounds that label to “64 MB”; it is not a decimal 64,000,000-byte contract. A profile JSON, CSV, calculator link or rescue note does not become a supported complete archive by changing its extension or filename.
Read archive review as review, not committed recovery
Selecting an archive starts local reading and structural review in a separate worker; it does not save records. The review checks supported structure and displays the six collection counts. An unreadable camera record rejects the file rather than silently removing or repairing it. Review has its own 30-second application limit and cancellation. Keep the original file, especially after an unsupported-file or memory error; editing it until a check accepts it can discard evidence.
Committing recovery is a later action with its own explicit review acknowledgment and the existing access requirements. A structurally readable file is not authenticated, and review does not certify original measurements, current rules or physical suitability. Do not transfer a historical software label into a new current verdict merely because its record parsed. After a confirmed recovery, inspect the saved inventory and relevant records before relying on them for another task.
Add records without merging or replacing existing history
Complete-archive recovery adds the six database collections together in one transaction. Existing records are never replaced. An ID or key collision, or a link that would connect an archived object with a separate local record, rejects the whole addition. This is why importing the same archive twice is not a normal incremental update. A collision is not an instruction to rename internal IDs or remove the destination records.
Save an appropriate copy of the destination’s current records before any later deliberate recovery. Browser preferences, consent receipts and unfinished workflow drafts can be present in an export but are not imported into the destination. The recovery action has a 30-second saving limit and requests cancellation until commit. A completed commit cannot be undone by Cancel. If the outcome remains unconfirmed, follow the existing reload-and-inventory boundary rather than repeating the write or claiming a rollback.
Keep the video-free copy and complete export distinct
Raw video can make a file much larger than the saved numerical records. The recovery copy without videos keeps saved fits, reduced pose series, internal metadata, bike profiles and bike history, but excludes every raw video and removes its copied playback links. It reports the excluded-video count. These changes affect the exported copy, not the source records; choosing this kind is not a delete-original-videos command.
A reduced pose series is not the original video and cannot restore all its pixels or sound. Keep the separate complete export if retaining those optional videos matters. The same recovery size limit applies to the no-video file; the exporter will not quietly omit additional saved records to squeeze it below the limit. A small file is not evidence that it contains everything, and a large complete export is not proof that the current recovery reader can accept it.
Resolve held proposals before calling an archive complete
Some failed or conflicted session changes are held only in the open tab. Settings pauses archive preparation and recovery while the relevant pending session or intake-revision copies exist. Return to that original workflow and read its recovery notice. Where provided, Download unsaved records or Download held session records preserves a separately scoped session copy; it is not the complete archive and does not contain pose landmarks or raw video.
Do not assume that every kind of tab memory has the same rescue action. In particular, an open dated-passport proposal is not automatically a saved history event or part of an archive. Leaving or reloading can lose a RAM proposal; an already dispatched native save may nevertheless finish. Keep the confirmed saved state separate from an unconfirmed or rejected proposal and follow the existing manual recovery action, without treating all open tabs as backed up.
Distinguish unknown inventory from an empty device
Settings reads database counts together and browser keys or drafts separately. While a read is pending, unknown counts are not zeros. If a refresh fails, the last completed counts can remain visible as historical while dependent preparation and deletion actions stay paused. Cancel inventory read stops the application waiting, not necessarily native database work; Retry inventory is a separate deliberate read, not an automatic repair or recovery write.
The displayed browser allocation is approximate. A successful small storage check or an available quota estimate cannot guarantee a later large export, save, recovery or retention period. If another browser appears empty, first verify that it is the intended device, browser profile and site. Do not create replacement records, clear data or repeatedly import a file merely to test whether the earlier information might still exist elsewhere.
Keep copies private beyond the site
An exported JSON file is not encrypted by this export workflow. It can contain bicycle notes, entered values, session context, reduced movement records and optional videos according to its kind. Store it only where the intended people have access. A download folder may be included in a separate device backup or synchronisation service under its own settings; that is different from OpenBikeFit providing account sync. Do not attach a complete rider or client archive to a general business inquiry.
Clearing the site, closing the guide or discarding an in-tab review cannot recall a printed, copied, downloaded or shared record. Chrome’s help distinguishes website storage from downloaded-file history; deleting a history listing is not a secure file-removal workflow. Decide recipients and retention for actual files separately. This guide does not perform deletion, configure a backup provider, make a confidentiality guarantee or replace your responsibilities for other people’s records.
When a record is already missing
An empty current view is not enough to determine why a record is absent. A failed read, different browser context, removed site data and a record never committed are different possibilities. Use the existing inventory and manual read recovery first, without changing the underlying data. Keep any original archive or profile file unchanged while checking its type and the appropriate reader. There is no promised server-side copy of core local fit data to request from this page.
If the only browser data and all external copies have actually been removed, this guide cannot reconstruct the missing observations, footage or history. A fresh blank worksheet can help document a new measurement occasion, but it must not be presented as recovered historical evidence. Record that distinction honestly. Re-entry, a fresh date and a plausible number do not establish continuity with the missing record.
Choose the next action without changing the bicycle
For a paper-first measurement, read the blank worksheet. For one saved bicycle, open My bikes or its setup card and inspect the current source. For a broader saved-data copy or supported archive review, open Settings. The fixed links carry no entered measurements, IDs or example records, and none starts export, import, printing or deletion. Existing pages can still read their own local state when deliberately opened.
Finally, keep documentation and physical decisions separate. An exported or restored value remains a recorded declaration with its original references, not a newly measured coordinate, component compatibility check, installation certificate or fit approval. A real bicycle may have changed after the record was made. Use current physical observations and exact component instructions for that later task; preserving an honest record is valuable without claiming it settles the task itself.
Practical questions
Frequently asked questions
Are my saved bike fit measurements synced to another phone?
OpenBikeFit core fit and bicycle records stay in the browser where they were saved; there is no account-side core-data sync. A browser account, bookmark or installed shortcut does not establish a copy on another device. Choose the appropriate explicit export and supported recovery workflow.
Is a dated passport copy a backup?
It is a history event inside the same local database, not an external backup. Its source is checked when saved, but its new date is not a new physical observation. A suitable exported archive is a separate action if you want to preserve that history outside the working browser.
What is the difference between profile JSON and a complete archive?
Profile JSON carries bike profiles only and is reviewed by Import bike profiles, which creates new IDs. A complete archive carries the six saved database collections and optional videos, with separately captured browser state. Its recovery adds supported records without replacing existing IDs; preferences, consent and drafts are not restored.
Can I restore a CSV, calculator link or session-rescue note?
Not through either saved-data importer merely because the content is readable. A one-bike CSV is a document, a calculator link recalculates entered inputs, and a session rescue has its own limited scope without pose landmarks or videos. Keep the original and use only the reader that explicitly supports its format.
How large can an archive or profile file be?
The profile reader accepts at most 100 profiles and 1,000,000 bytes. The complete-archive reader accepts up to 64 MiB, exactly 67,108,864 bytes, even where existing UI copy rounds the label to 64 MB. Available device memory is still required; being below a limit does not guarantee successful recovery.
Does the recovery copy without videos delete my recordings?
No. It leaves out raw videos and removes playback links only in the exported copy, while preserving saved fits, reduced pose records and bicycle data. Originals are unchanged. Keep the separate complete export if you need those videos; reduced landmarks cannot reconstruct the original footage.
What should I do after a duplicate-ID or unknown-outcome message?
Do not rename internal IDs, delete the destination or blindly repeat recovery. Complete-archive collisions reject the whole addition without merging. An unconfirmed outcome requires the existing reload-and-inventory check; confirmed commit and confirmed rollback are different states. Preserve both original files and the destination’s own copy.
Does reading this guide export or recover anything?
No. Its ledger and timeline are ordinary public content, with no personal inputs or file action. The links open existing pages without values or IDs. Preparing a file, downloading it, selecting it for review and committing a supported recovery remain separate deliberate actions with existing requirements.
